Stamps extend linebacker Mayo

The Calgary Stampeders are already working towards their next class of free agents, announcing on Thursday that the club has extended the contract of import linebacker Deron Mayo.

Originally signed for the 2012 season, Mayo’s first year role with the Stamps was largely that of special teams, where he contributed 15 tackles, adding in nine defensive tackles and one sack.

Mayo started 15 games at strongside linebacker for the Stampeders last season, compiling 57 tackles, five sacks, and one interception after Malik Jackson was injured in the team’s third game of the season against the Montreal Alouettes.

He is the younger brother of New England Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo.

Our take: Mayo’s play after Jackson’s injury was good enough for the Stamps to let Jackson walk as a free agent. The next man up mentality of the Stampeders was a large reason for their 14 win season in 2013, and Mayo played a key role in doing so. With family blood in the NFL, the extension is good news for the Stampeders knowing that as of this moment, Deron is not looking to seek a job down south.
